To some who would hear that one thinks Cal Ripken or Reggie Jackson rookie cards are a better investment than rookie cards of Mike Trout, some might say no way.
Let me explain this logic. For one, Mike Trout is a mega superstar these days and his Topps Update rookie card is worth about $200. However, he is still playing in the Major Leagues and the future value of his rookie card is tied to how well he performs. With a $200 card, there is a lot of speculation built in. Just look at what happened to rookie cards of Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez as they fell in value later in the players' careers. I am not saying that will happen with Mike Trout, but risk is there.
For rookie cards of Cal Ripken, a nice near mint one from say 1982 Donruss can be found for under $20. You could buy ten of those compared to one Mike Trout Topps Update rookie card. I would say the Ripken rookies would be a much safer investment, and that $200 spent there could turn into $300 or more in 10 years.
A Reggie Jackson near mint rookie is about $100. He is an example of an established hall of famer that, in my opinion will always be in demand for the years to come.
I view the Jackson and Ripken rookies as better investments. Do you agree? Please post in the comments.
